Shropshire Union Canal Society

The Shropshire Union canal network stretches in the east from the Midlands to the Mersey. In the west it reaches into north and mid Wales via the Llangollen and Montgomery Canals.

Play a role in safeguarding this beautiful community asset. For over 50 years the Shropshire Union Canal Society has worked to maintain, improve and restore it. We are open and welcoming and always looking for new people to get involved.

Saturn Fly-Boat

Saturn is the only remaining Shropshire Union fly-boat.  She was built at Chester in 1906, made of Oak and Elm.  She was first used to carry cheese and farm produce.

The fly-boats ran a timetabled horse-drawn express delivery service.  They connected Ellesmere Port, Mid and North Wales, Manchester, Birmingham, Cheshire, Shropshire and the Potteries.

Saturn worked as a horse-drawn cargo boat until 1955 and was then converted to a cruising hotel boat, taking passengers of canal holidays.

Saturn Fly-Boat is an educational and heritage charity, run entirely by volunteers.  Saturn travels the canals for school visits and public events.
